King Socrates was born in the town of Sandy Point where at an early age his natural musical ability manifested itself in his performance on a variety of musical instruments. He migrated to the USVI in the early 60’s and continued to hone his musical skills which groomed him into an accomplished singer, songwriter, musical arranger, band leader and recording artist.
As a Calypsonian he is credited as the most consistent and enduring performer with over 35 years of experience. This sterling track record began in the early 80’s when he entered the proverbial Calypso ‘bullring’ under the sobriquet ‘King Socrates’. Calypso pundits would remember vividly the stir that was caused with his popular ‘Banjo Solo’ a scintillating up tempo Calypso glorifying the sound of our traditional musical instrument. His class and style in lyrical and musical content complimented by his imposing well-dressed stature declared that this contender would go on to be one of the most feared gladiators in the Calypso Arena. He has been through many battles in competitions held locally and regionally out of which he has amassed seventeen calypso crowns ranging from the ‘Buy Local’, national, federal and regional titles amongst them the. ‘Witty Calypso Crown’. I am sure no one would argue with the fact that Socrates is considered to be the most prolific songwriter producing great songs not only for himself but for other Calypsonians and entertainers in and out of the Federation.
This master lyricist best known for his stinging social commentaries has given us such great compositions as ‘Killer on the Road’, ‘The Big Bad Wolf’, ‘You Ain’t Giving Me’, ‘The Real Health Scare’ and ‘The Apology’ amongst others. His flip side brings out a versatility steeped in creative and witty party-type songs such as ‘No Ting, No Ring’, ‘The Price of Saltfish’ and ‘Man’s Best Friend’ to name a few.
In 2000, Socrates saw the need to provide an opportunity to mentor and expose more Calypsonians to the annual Calypso Tent season and so he founded the Legends Calypso Tent bringing together some of the most accomplished musicians to accompany over 30 Calypsonians in preparations for the various competitions. Further to this King Socrates has ensured that when the final curtain is drawn and the lights go down his legacy will live on in his daughter, the very accomplished Queen Anastasia, a multi-crowned Calypso Monarch as well as his son the Mighty J, now making his bones in the Calypso Arena.
Socrates in his quest to raise the continuity of this sacred musical art form.
